BOOMING BEIJING BUT….. THE POLLUTION

“Stay inside!” When the air quality index is between 301 and 500, as it has been in Beijing the past days, it means conditions are hazardous. The US Embassy tracks the level of pollution in Beijing on an hourly basis and posts results on Twitter ( http://twitter.com/beijingair). Though Twitter is one of many sites blocked in China, foreigners can check it from their office computers sometimes.
When air becomes hazardous to breath, you don’t need numbers to tell you. So how do you know? Your eyes burn, your throat hurts, and your chest aches.
Many people are addicted to Beijing and I get it. It’s a vibrant, dynamic city with a lot to offer both locals and foreigners alike. Still, when I hear people – parents – say that they want to stay here as long as possible, I always take pause. The effects of pollution are cumulative, but one doesn’t have to search too hard to learn about what the long term effects of breathing dangerous air might be. China is the future, but is it a short term future in term of life expectation?
Yesterday, as we drove for a couple of hours to see a few sites, I surveyed the landscape around me, the brownish haze made it feel as if I were viewing the world through a sepia filter. Not my kind of paradise….
I feel for all the children raised in this kind of environment. Their little lungs must be suffering so much…. what will be their life in a few years when they suffer from severe asthma?
Gonna leave the lounge and board my plane back to Tokyo. See you!

“中で待機してください！” ここ最近の北京がそうであるように、大気汚染の指標が301から500を示す時、これはとても有害な状態だという意味なの。合衆国大使館は北京の大気汚染を一時間刻みで探知しツィッターに載せているのよ。 ( http://twitter.com/beijingair) 中国ではツィッターの多くのサイトがブロックされているのだけれど、海外の人達は会社のコンピューターから時々チェックできてしまうの。
息をするのが危険な状態にまで大気が汚染されたら、指標は必要ないわ。何故ならあなたの眼や喉が痛くなり、胸も痛くなってくるの。
たくさんの人々が中国に夢中になっていて、それは私もわかるわ。現地の人々と海外からの人々のエネルギーが混ざり合い、とても刺激的でダイナミックな都市ですもの。でも、親御さん達が出来るだけ長くこの都市に住みたいという声を聞くと、私はいつもためらってしまうの。大気汚染の被害は増加しているのだもの。中国は未来よ、でも生活する上では短い未来と言えるのではないかしら？
昨日、数時間かけて車で観光名所に行ったのだけど、周りを見渡したら、茶色がかったもやがかかっていて、まるで世界にセピア色のフィルターがかかっているようだったわ。これは私の中でパラダイスとは言えない....。
このような環境下で育つ子供達が心配だわ。彼等の小さな肺はとても汚染されているはず....深刻な喘息に悩まされた彼等の数年後はどうなってしまうのかしら。
そろそろラウンジを出て、東京行きの飛行機に乗らないと。またね！
BEIJING NEWS, GOOD MORNING THE WORLD
Beijing is waking up with a big smile on its face and me too, because the sun is bright and high in the sky today. I love waking up in my hotel room, reading the local newspapers in English, watching the news on CNN and ordering a healthy breakfast in my room with my beautiful husband.
On Thursday evening, our plane did not take off due to the bad weather in Beijing and the ban to land to any airlines. We had to spend the night at the Narita Airport’s ANA hotel. And we had to wake up at 3:30 am to go check-in and take-off super early in the morning. Our friend could land because he flew with his family private jet from Oman. I don’t get why, private planes could land, but not commercial ones? Oh well… It is a high class problem, which surpasses me… I am against private flights that pollutes the environment ever more…. but we love our friend Jim, also let’s drop it!
I am staying at the boutique Hotel called The Opposite House which was designed by a Japanese architect. It is very art friendly, everywhere in the hotel there are paintings, sculptures and unique art displays. Very creative-stimulant. My room is white and the floor is entirely covered with Japanese wood which makes the room smell like in an onsen, in the Mountains of Japan.
The rooms at The Opposite House are called “studio”, ours is “Studio 70″, with floor to ceiling windows, in a 70 sqm room which reveal the full extent of a strikingly simple design. A large bathroom, and mood lightning system helps to make us relax. I had a 70 mn foot massage yesterday and then I flew out of the door to a meeting with one of the key movie production company. A big project in the making… unfortunately for all the parties involved, I cannot reveal anything yet….but I am very excited!!!
Everyone is here, from Will Smith and his entire family to Jackie Chan. My friend Dany Wolf, superstar Hollywood producer, surprised me last night and jumped on me, out of nowhere, at the trendy lounge bar called Lan, where I was listening to a pop band, sipping on a glass of Perrier with fresh lemon, with a group of 9 people.I post pictures after I am back, we danced and laugh, and danced some more. Viva la vida…. que nunca se pare te ser bonita……
My sweet husband had arranged the all thing as a big surprise for me. I could not believe it! I did not know that the all cast was flying from Shanghai in the afternoon, after the premiere of The Karate Kid! Such a delight to see Dany! He is one of the funniest, most interesting and deep-caring person in the entire world. Also I deeply cherish his friendship for those precious reasons since the past 10 and more years.
Gonna run to go have Chinese lunch with my friend Jim Chang, he is calling my room right now,…… then we will be visiting art galleries. I love Chinese art, so unique and surprising.

ABOUT LAN Beijing….. you should visit it…. spectacular place to dine, drink, smoke cigar or to listen to super live music and the most fantastic interior, from room to room to room to room to more private rooms, it’s endless. Whenever in Beijing, you must experience it.
北京ニュース、おはようみんな！
北京の朝はとても爽やかに始まり、私も朝から笑顔よ。何故なら今日は太陽が高くキラキラと輝いていているから。ホテルの部屋で置き、英語のローカル新聞を読み、CNNでニュースをチェックし、ルームサービスを頼み大好きな夫と健康的な朝食を食べているこの時間が大好き。
木曜日の夜に行くはずだったのだけれど、北京が悪天候だった為、成田を離陸できなかったの。結局私達はその夜ANAホテルに宿泊し、次の日の早朝3時半に起きて再度成田空港に向かったのよ。ただオーマンから北京に向かった私達の友達は、私達が離陸できなかった日に彼等のプライベートジェットで北京に着陸できたの。何故プライベートジェットは着陸できるの？わからない...。そうね、これは私を凌ぐハイクラスの問題ね...そこら中に環境汚染をもたらすプライベートジェットに私個人的には反対だけど、友達のジムは大好きだから、私達も乗っちゃえ！
私達は日本人建築家がデザインした、The Opposite Houseというブティックホテルに宿泊しているの。ホテル中に色々な絵や彫刻あり、ユニークなディスプレイがなされているわ。とても刺激的な創作ね。私の部屋は白が貴重で、床はまるで日本の山の中にある温泉の香りを思い起こさせるような日本の木から出来ているの。
部屋は"スタジオ"と呼ぶみたいで、私達はスタジオ70、70平米の部屋で、シンプルなデザインがとても際立っているわ。広いバスルームがあり、ムードのある部屋の調光器のおかげでとてもリラックスできるわ。昨日は70分のフットマッサージをうけた後、大手プロダクション会社とのミーティングに行ってきたわ。とても大きなプロジェクトが進行中なの....それに関わっているたくさんの人々の為にも残念ながら今何も語ることができないのだけれど....とても楽しくて仕方ないわ！
ここにいるウィル・スミスから彼の家族、そしてジャッキー・チェンや私の友達であるハリウッド監督ダニー・ウォルフまで、みんなが昨夜どこからともなく現れて私を驚かせたわ。Landという流行りのバーラウンジで、フレッシュレモン付きのペリエを飲みながら、ポップバンドの音楽を聴き、9人のグループでとても楽しんだわ。たくさん踊ってたくさん笑って、そしてまたたくさん踊って...帰国したら写真をアップするわね。
そしてこれら全て、私の夫が内緒でアレンジしてくれたの。もう信じられなかったわ。彼等が昨日夕方に、The Karate Kidのプレミアの後上海から北京に来ていたなんて知らなかったんだもの！ダニーに会えてとても嬉しかった。彼は世界中で、とても面白くてとても楽しくて、そして とても心の優しい人 の一人なの。私は彼と10年以上良い友情関係を築けていることに幸せを感じるわ。
そろそろ友達のジム・チャンとチャイニーズランチを食べに出かけなくちゃ。部屋の外で私のことを呼んでいるわ。ランチの後はアートギャラリーを観に行くのよ。私は中国のアートが大好き、だってとてもユニークで驚きの連続なんですもの！
